At North Shore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, our kids programs are not treated as an add-on or a side class. They are a core part of our academy and are taught with the same care, structure, and intention as our adult programs.
We believe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu should help children build confidence, discipline, and resilience — while learning how to handle real-world challenges like bullying in a safe, non-violent way.
Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Taught With Purpose
.
Led by Experienced Black Belts
Our kids programs are taught and overseen by academy owners and black belts with decades of experience teaching children.
Danny Morera is a 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Master Roberto Maia of Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a highly respected Coral Belt with direct Gracie lineage. Danny began teaching children in martial arts in the early 1990s and has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1997, alongside extensive experience in karate, kickboxing, and grappling.
Angela Morera, academy owner and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, is also actively involved in our kids programs, helping guide curriculum, structure, and communication with families.
This level of experience allows us to teach kids with clarity, control, and consistency — not chaos.
More Than a Sport. A Martial Arts System.
While Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has grown in popularity as a sport, we believe kids training should remain rooted in martial arts principles.
Our approach emphasizes:
Respect and discipline
Confidence without aggression
Structure and clear expectations
Healthy movement and body awareness
Learning how to handle conflict without unnecessary violence
Classes are organized, intentional, and age-appropriate. Children are taught how to work with partners safely, follow instruction, and develop focus — skills that carry far beyond the mats.
Our Kids Programs
Tiny Champs (Ages 4-6): Foundations Through Movement
We introduce Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through structured movement, games, and non-violent controls. Classes focus on coordination, listening skills, and body awareness, using playful activities that quietly build foundational skills.
This age group also begins our character development and “mat chat” discussions, helping children learn respect, patience, and cooperation.
Foundations Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 7-9): Confidence, Control, and Bully Prevention
As children grow, they begin working more closely with partners and small groups. Classes include controlled sparring, age-appropriate techniques, and continued movement-based warmups.
At this stage, we place a strong emphasis on verbal confidence, bully prevention, and problem-solving skills, alongside technical development.
This is our most active and full program — and where structure matters most.
Youth Leadership Jiu-Jitsu (Ages 10-14) Skill, Leadership, and Growth
This age group introduces more advanced techniques and a deeper understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, always taught with safety and control as the priority.
Students begin learning competition rules and training strategies, while also developing leadership, responsibility, and physical conditioning. For many children, this program provides much-needed structure during a challenging stage of development.
If Your Child Has Tried Other Programs
We regularly work with children who have trained at other academies — or tried different martial arts — and felt overwhelmed, overlooked, or discouraged.
If your child hasn’t had a positive experience elsewhere, we encourage you not to give up on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu altogether. A thoughtful, structured environment can make all the difference.
